THE STATE OF THE BIOSCIENCES IN NEBRASKA

The biosciences industry sector is defined to include the following subsectors:

  • Agricultural Feedstock and Chemicals
  • Drugs and Pharmaceuticals
  • Medical Devices and Equipment
  • Research, Testing, and Medical Laboratories

This sector represents high impact to economic growth with 1.3 million U.S. employees in 2006. Employment increased by 5.7 percent between 2001 and 2006, compared with a 3.1 percent increase in employment in the overall private sector. On average, employees in the biosciences sector earn higher wages than other industries.

The state of Nebraska was one of few states to experience significant increases in employment between 2001 and 2006 in the agricultural feedstock and chemicals sector (up 32 percent). The academic biosciences research expenditures within the state were nearly $250 million in 2006.
