May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month

(May 11, 2009) The Creighton University Osteoporosis Research Center (ORC), one of the world’s oldest and foremost authorities on osteoporosis prevention and treatment, will offer two public events in May as well as an opportunity to receive free bone-density screenings.

On Saturday, May 9th, members of the ORC staff will be at the downtown Omaha Farmers’ Market, 11th and Jackson streets. On Wednesday, May 27, ORC Director Robert Recker, M.D., will speak at a free, public event, 7-8 p.m., at Creighton University Medical Center’s Morrison Room, 601 N. 30th St.

Persons attending the May 27 presentation will be offered the opportunity to register for free bone-density screenings, which are critical to the prevention and early detection of osteoporosis, a debilitating disease that can strike both men and women. Postmenopausal women are at particular risk. To be eligible, individuals must be at least 19 years old, have not received a bone scan from Creighton within the past two years, and weigh less than 300 pounds.
